Specialized Care to Help You Feel More Comfortable in Your Body
Living with swelling, heaviness, fullness, or changes in your limbs can be frustrating—especially when you’re not sure why it’s happening or what can be done about it.
At Magic City Physical Therapy, we provide specialized lymphedema and lipedema therapy in Hoover, Alabama, and throughout the Birmingham metro area. Our physical and occupational therapists are Certified Lymphedema Therapists with advanced training in the evaluation and treatment of lymphatic disorders, including training in the Vodder technique for Manual Lymph Drainage.
We understand that lymphedema and lipedema are more than physical conditions. Swelling, changes in your body, difficulty finding clothing that fits, discomfort, and concerns about how your body looks or feels can affect confidence and everyday life. Our goal is to provide knowledgeable, compassionate care in a private and comfortable environment where you feel supported—not judged.
Understanding Lymphedema
Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to effectively move lymphatic fluid, resulting in swelling and changes in the affected area. It can develop because of a genetic or developmental condition, surgery, cancer treatment, injury, infection, or other factors that affect the lymphatic system.
Lymphedema can affect the arms or legs, but it can also occur in the abdomen, trunk, chest, breast, head, neck, or genital region.
Early treatment can be especially helpful. However, it is never too late to seek care. Even when swelling has been present for years, specialized lymphedema therapy can help improve fluid movement, tissue mobility, comfort, function, and your ability to manage the condition long-term.
Understanding Lipedema
Lipedema is a chronic condition involving an abnormal distribution of fatty tissue, most commonly affecting the legs and sometimes the arms. It occurs almost exclusively in women and is often associated with tenderness, heaviness, easy bruising, and a disproportionate appearance between the upper and lower body.
Lipedema is frequently misunderstood or mistaken for obesity or ordinary weight gain. It is not simply a matter of diet or exercise, and many women spend years feeling frustrated because traditional approaches don’t address the underlying condition.
While there is no single treatment that works for everyone with lipedema, specialized therapy can help manage symptoms, support lymphatic function, improve mobility, and help you better understand your body and your options.
For women who are considering or preparing for lipedema reduction surgery, our therapists can help you optimize mobility, lymphatic function, tissue health, strength, and overall physical readiness before surgery. We also provide postoperative rehabilitation to help support recovery, manage swelling, address tissue changes, restore mobility, and gradually return to normal activities following surgery.
Our goal is to support you throughout the process—not just before or after surgery, but as part of your long-term management of lipedema.
How We Can Help
Your treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, stage of disease, tissue changes, lifestyle, and goals. Depending on your needs, therapy may include Manual Lymph Drainage, compression therapy and garment recommendations, therapeutic exercise, skin care education, movement strategies, breathing techniques, soft tissue techniques, and education for long-term self-management.
For more advanced lymphedema or areas of significant tissue fibrosis, treatment may also focus on improving tissue mobility and helping soften and remodel hardened areas of tissue fibrosis.
We don’t simply treat the swelling. We look at how your lymphatic system is functioning and how swelling is affecting your movement, comfort, strength, skin health, and daily activities.
Manual Lymph Drainage
Manual Lymph Drainage, or MLD, is a specialized hands-on technique used to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through functioning lymphatic pathways. This is not deep tissue massage.
Our therapists are trained in the Vodder technique of Manual Lymph Drainage, a specialized approach developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and widely used in the treatment of lymphedema and other lymphatic conditions.
Unlike traditional massage, MLD uses specific, gentle techniques that follow the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system. Your therapist may use MLD as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to help manage swelling, support lymphatic circulation, and improve tissue health.
Compression Therapy
Compression is an important component of managing many types of lymphedema and lipedema. Compression garments or bandaging can help control swelling, support tissue, and maintain improvements achieved during treatment.
Because everyone’s body and swelling pattern is different, we can help determine what type and level of compression may be appropriate for you. We can also help with garment selection, fitting, and education so you feel confident managing your compression at home.
Caring for Your Whole Body
Lymphatic conditions can affect much more than the size of an arm or leg. Swelling and tissue changes can influence movement, strength, balance, endurance, clothing choices, skin health, and confidence.
Our physical and occupational therapists consider how your condition affects your entire day. Occupational therapy can be particularly helpful when swelling or other physical limitations interfere with dressing, work, household activities, exercise, or other meaningful daily tasks.
Our goal is not just to reduce swelling during your appointments. We want to give you the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage your condition in everyday life.
Lymphedema After Cancer Treatment
Lymphedema can develop after lymph node removal, radiation, surgery, or other cancer treatments. It can affect the arm, breast, chest, trunk, or other areas depending on the type of cancer and treatment received.
If you’ve noticed swelling, tightness, heaviness, fullness, decreased range of motion, or changes in how your clothing fits following cancer treatment, a Certified Lymphedema Therapist can evaluate your symptoms and help determine an appropriate treatment approach.
Early evaluation can help you understand what is happening and give you tools for managing changes before they become more difficult to control.
Who We Treat
We provide lymphedema and lipedema therapy for people with a wide range of lymphatic conditions, including primary and secondary lymphedema, lipedema, swelling following surgery or cancer treatment, chronic swelling, and tissue fibrosis.
We also work with people experiencing swelling related to orthopedic procedures, vascular conditions, trauma, or other medical conditions when appropriate. For individuals with wounds associated with swelling or lymphatic conditions, we also provide wound care services to support healing, protect the skin, and address the underlying factors that may contribute to delayed wound healing.
Our goal is to address more than the swelling itself. We consider the health of your skin and tissues, mobility, comfort, function, and overall ability to manage your condition in everyday life.
